There are five steps that are involved in road construction:
– Planning – Setting Out – Earthworks – Paving – Quality Control
• Planning; This is always the first step involved in any road construction project as it’s the most important.
For this step, you must assess the current and potential future traffic patterns. The weight of traffic is vital knowledge before constructing a road. It will need to be thorough research to make sure the new layout serves it’s purpose.
• Setting Out; This process is transferring the design from drawings into the ground. It establishes site borders, foundations as well as any other structural features.
• Earthworks; This step requires the most work by far. This is the process of ending the excavation process and beginning the construction of the road. A digger or grader is required to remove the topsoil before exposing the formation level. Also known as underlying ground.
• Paving; This procedure can only begin once the prepared and drainage system has been fitted and installed. Paving comes in different styles and finishes, dependent on the requirements they can be flexible or rigid. It’s all based on the precise measurements of the project.
• Quality Control; Once the road surface has been installed, there are a number of quality checks that must be carried out before the project can be seen as finished. These checks involve checking all the features of the road are complete to a satisfactory level such as the drainage.
Once all the steps above are complete, the road construction process can be deemed complete. All of these steps need to be completed in order for the road to be safe, and up to the standard giving it the durability to handle the traffic load of the area.
